Day 1: Seminar
Spatial Data Infrastructures explained
- What is a Spatial Data Infrastructure: why do you need it? What's the business case?
- SDI in Australia: where are we up to? Where to next?
- Understand the underlying standards and technologies: which ones actually matter?
- Case studies: Community Access to Natural Resources Information (CANRI) & Local-e e-Mapping Project for NSW Local Councils
- Building an SDI: a simplified approach
- Technology & policy challenges: what are they and how to solve them?
- Beyond the buzzwords: de-jargonizing the terminology and technology. What are they and how, when and why use them?
Day 2: Technical workshop (full day PC lab)
Developing a Web application using maps
- Learn how to publish geographic data online for use in multiple and distributed applications (Spatial Data Infrastructure)
- Understanding SDI technical architectures
- Develop an SDI using commercial and open source tools (eg: UMN Mapserver & Geoserver WFS)
- Tips and pitfalls in developing an SDI
- Configure proprietary products to use effectively within an SDI
- Learn how to use GML effectively
